We didn't realize you didn't need a passport to cross the border. I guess they are tightening up on security betweeen the two countries. I was in Canada 2 years ago, no problems, but now Passports are needed. Even when visiting Mexico on a cruise ship recently we were encouraged to carry our passports at all times.
